How custom themes work

Every kid has that one thing they're obsessed with at any given moment. Sometimes it lines up with one of our standard themes. Often it doesn't. Here's the process:

    Tell us what your kid is into

    A character, a band, a hobby, a specific animal, a color, an aesthetic, a movie. Anything.

  2. 2

    We design the project

    Within 3–5 business days of booking, we send you 1–2 project concepts with rough sketches. We adjust until you (and the birthday kid) love it.

  3. 3

    We bring everything custom-made

    Themed setup, supplies matched to the theme, instruction designed around the project.

Custom themes we've done

  • A K-pop themed party where kids painted album-cover-style portraits of themselves
  • A Spider-Man comic-panel painting party (multiple comic panels, kids assembled their own page)
  • A horse-girl themed party where each kid painted their dream horse from a chosen breed
  • A Taylor Swift “Eras”-themed party — different album aesthetic per painting station
  • A Greek mythology painting party for a 10-year-old myth-obsessed kid
  • A Dungeons & Dragons character portrait party for a 12-year-old's first DnD-themed birthday
  • A monarch butterfly themed party tied to a kid's school science project
  • A specific dog breed (golden doodle) party — every kid painted a doodle

If we can imagine a way to teach it, we can do it.

What's included

  • Custom theme design (1–2 concepts to pick from)
  • Custom-matched supplies and setup
  • Project tailored to the age group
  • All standard party inclusions (instruction, take-home art, setup, cleanup, “Artist of the Day” crown)

Custom theme design fee: $50+ on top of standard party pricing. Final fee depends on complexity. We'll give you a clear quote before you commit.

Limits

We're flexible, but a few things we don't do:

  • Trademarked character likenesses we can't legally reproduce (we'll do “in the style of” but not exact copies)
  • Themes that aren't age-appropriate for the kids attending
  • Projects that require equipment we don't have (3D printing, kilns, etc.) — though we can sometimes substitute

If your idea is in a gray area, just ask.

When to book

Custom themes need at least 3 weeks of lead time (vs. 1–2 weeks for standard themes). We need time to design, source supplies, and run concepts past you. For more elaborate custom themes (full set design, multiple project stations), 4–6 weeks is better.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra does custom cost?
$50+ on top of the standard tier pricing. Most custom themes land at $50–150 extra, depending on complexity.
What if my kid changes their mind about the theme after we book?
As long as we haven't ordered specialty supplies yet, we can pivot. Once we've ordered, the theme is locked.
Can we see the project before the party?
Yes — we send concept sketches before final design lock. You can request changes.
What if my idea is hard to translate into an art project?
We'll figure it out. We've designed parties around abstract things like “the color blue” and “her favorite song.” If we can't make it work, we'll tell you upfront and suggest alternatives.
Is custom available in all party tiers?
Yes — Mini Artist, Little Studio, and Masterpiece Party all support custom themes. The custom design fee is the same across tiers.
